John’s main work involves coordinating child passenger safety and vehicle occupant protection programs funded by the Florida Department of Transportation. John conducts research, writes and edits materials, manages databases, and coordinates with partners across the state, with the ultimate goal of reducing injuries and fatalities on Florida roadways.

John has a background in journalism and worked as a reporter and editor for newspapers, magazines, and online publications for two decades. After graduating from UF, John went on to cover state legislatures in Texas and Utah, and edit magazines in Dallas and Houston. He says journalism prepared him for his current role by honing his writing, communication, management, and research skills. As a journalist, he also dealt extensively with public policy and programs and their impact on everyday citizens.

Aside from journalism, John credits his time as a rideshare driver with stoking his interest in transportation and passenger safety.  John recently became a certified child passenger safety technician, which has given him a new perspective on his role. In his spare time, John plays tennis and guitar, and enjoys tackling a seemingly endless array of home-improvement projects.
